Who invented Stun Guns?

Who invented stun guns? Also, known as Tasers, these weapons are quite common today, though their origins are largely unknown to the general population.

Do you want to hear an interesting fact? The name Taser was actually taken from a fictitious novel. While it may seem bizarre, it is true – the name Taser was derived from Tom Swift and His Electric Rifle. Many years after this novel came out inventor Jack Cover created the Taser gun, which was an acronym for Thomas A. Swift’s Electric Rifle. To answer the earlier question (who invented stun guns?), the simple answer is that Jack Cover did.

Jack Cover was a NASA researcher that never forgot his childhood hero Tom Swift. Recalling the famous novel mentioned above, Cover began to wonder if an electric rifle was an actual possibility. He began working on the Taser in 1969, and by 1974 he had finished his work. After naming the weapon for the Swift novel that prompted his invention, Cover presented it various police forces around the nation. The Taser gained a lot of attention in 1991 when it was used by the Los Angeles Police Department upon an attacker named Rodney King. Unfortunately, the Taser that the LAPD had at that time also happened to have a faulty battery.

Though it was originally an invention that was spawned from an innocent childhood book, the Taser has come under a lot of heavy fire lately. There have been numerous deaths caused by Tasers within Canada. One such case that prompted the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to put orders for these weapons on hold was the Robert Dziekanski death. Using a number of Tasers on Dziekanski (a confused Polish immigrant), the RCMP managed to shock him to death. Since that incident, the use of the Taser is being reviewed by Canadian officials as well as officials around the globe. Now that you know who invented stun guns, you can take a closer look into the weapon itself.

Used properly, those that manufacture these guns assure the public that they are safe. However, there is a very fine line between excessive usage and careful usage. Many believe that these guns are not safe, and they may even be outlawed in numerous countries within a few years.

Who invented stun guns? Well, Jack Cover did. From childhood fantasy to real life drama, these guns are something of a hot debate topic within today’s world.
