Who Invented Mace?
Who invented mace? Well, we can only trace the history of this chemical back so far, though we do know what company first began to manufacturer the tear gas form.
Many decades ago, mace was essentially tear gas. Today, this chemical is closer to pepper spray than tear gas. The first can to hit markets was manufactured by Lake Erie Chemical. This bottle was often sold as “Chemical Mace.” Back then, Lake Erie Chemical was a division of Smith & Wesson, though today this chemical is sold exclusively by Mace Security International. Some companies tend to manufacture products that are similar to this original formula, but Mace Security International is the only company to manufacture the real thing. Now that you know who invented mace, let’s talk about why this chemical can be useful.
When it is sprayed in an attacker’s face, this chemical will cause the eyes to tear uncontrollably. Additionally, the attacker will experience sever pain, and some will ever experience temporary blindness. Usually, showing an attacker the bottle, spraying it lightly, and telling an attacker to go away will work (since most of them are aware what this chemical can do). However, some states do not allow any type of pepper spray of tear gas, and it happens to be entirely illegal in Canada. In California, the misuse of any form of chemical spray comes with a steep $1000 fine and up to three years in prison. You cannot use this spray as a joke, when you are angry, or for the sake of a bit of fun.
There are some people that cannot own a can of this spray under any circumstances. Those that cannot purchase mace include minors, drug addicts, or people that have committed felonies. It is best to contact the state that you live in before purchasing any kind of spray. Some states will allow people to spray pepper spray at bears, though mace and tear gas are almost always illegal when used against animals. If you want to purchase some of this spray for you own protection, check with your state first – you don’t want to end up in jail thanks to an illegal purchase. While it’s interesting to research various facts about this chemical (including who invented mace), it is not wise to buy it unless you are authorized to do so.
While people tend to take this spray lightly, the effects can be very serious. Should you feel as though your life is in danger every day, consider speaking with state officials prior to purchase.
Who invented mace? Well, now you know (remember, it is no longer made by Lake Erie Chemical!).
