During the Seventies, tear gas was used a lot. Police officers often used tear gas in order to break up protests. From this type of chemical came the chemical called mace, which was a derivative of tear gas. Today, mace is actually a form of pepper spray. Since tear gas was found to be quite inhumane, it is rarely every used today. Instead, many states allow civilians to carry some form of pepper spray, which is believed to be less cruel. So, our mace facts begin with pepper spray.
Pepper spray is extremely effective for warding off an attacker. When sprayed in an attacker’s face, this chemical will cause temporary blindness. If an attacker receives a proper dose of the chemical, they will not be able to open their eyes for up to ten minutes. Sometimes, this spray is also called O.C. spray (OC stands for oleoresin capsicum, which happens to be the active ingredient founds in cayenne pepper). Some believe that pepper spray is an all natural chemical, though some manufacturers do add various ingredients to the mix.
Used by almost every law enforcement agency within the United States, pepper spray is useful. Unlike tear gas, this spray will not cause any permanent harm, though it will allow police officers to arrest a suspect easily. Pepper spray comes in three different types ranging from the hottest to the mildest. Look for the SHU number (a higher number equates a stronger spray); the type of agent that keeps the OC inside of the bottle; and the size of the liquid that is sprayed (smaller is better). Also, try and find out how each type of spray bottle shoots the liquid, since some are more effective than others. The only thing to remember is that some states don’t allow this type of spray to be carried by civilians. Also, you cannot take this spray on an airplane with you. Lastly, be advised that most other countries do not allow this type of weapon.
