Basic Personal Safety Tips

When it comes to walking down the street, riding in your car, or heading out for a jog, there are some basic personal safety tips that should always be adhered to.

Those that have survived an attack know how difficult this kind of situation can be. If you have been, or become, the victim of an attack don’t think about what you might have done differently. Instead, think about the things that you did do in order to survive the attack. There is no way to prevent a possible attack, since attackers usually wait for victims randomly. Instead of trying to prevent an attack, follow these basic personal safety tips.

If you want to exercise, but you don’t feel as though your area is safe, consider walking or running indoors on a treadmill. Also, you can look for a gym that has an indoor track that you can run on. Another good idea is to head out onto those running and walking paths with a partner. Thieves don’t usually attack people that are with others, and they usually don’t attack people that are in high traffic areas. Make a habit of sticking to main roads while you are alone. You may also want to avoid any small tree lined areas, since these are perfect for hiding an attacker.

When you are walking anywhere, try and keep your head held high. If you look like you know where you are going, thieve are less likely to target you. Realistically, thieves want to target people that make simple, well, targets. If you are standing around with your purse dangling from one finger, you can be sure that you will become a victim. You might also want to think about heading out for that walk or run with a dog. Even tiny dogs tend to ward off possible attackers that don’t want to be bitten. Some other basic personal safety tips include carrying pepper spray or a whistle; screaming for help when you see an attacker; heading into a business when you think that you are being followed; and running when you see an attacker approach you.

If you notice that a car is following you, simply turn around and run in the other direction. By the time the car can effectively make a u-turn, you should be long gone.

It can be tempted to head out onto shady paths for a nice walk or jog, but keep in mind the basic personal safety tips mentioned above. You cannot prevent an attack, but you can try and get away from one.
